What people mean by AI
AI is a machine that has read an enormous amount and guesses what usually comes next. It is not a person, and it does not know things the way you know them.
Run it like this
- Write half a familiar sentence on the board. Have the room call out the ending.
- Point out that everyone converged on the same few words. That convergence is the mechanism.
- Now write a sentence with no obvious ending and watch the guesses scatter.
- Tell them the scattering is what a model does when it invents something.
Ages 4-6
Say once upon a, and stop. Let the room finish it. Then tell them the computer does that with everything, because it has seen an enormous number of examples. Do it two or three more times with other endings they know.
You are listening for: A child finishing one of your sentences, then saying the computer would guess it too.
Ages 7-9
Give them the scale first. It read more than any person could read in a whole lifetime, and what it learned was which words tend to go together. Then the important bit: it is not looking an answer up, it is building one a piece at a time.
You are listening for: A student saying it builds an answer rather than finding one.
Ages 10-12
Prediction machine. Given everything so far, what is most likely next, done a few hundred times over. Then separate two things they usually treat as one, which is how well something is written and whether it is true.
You are listening for: A student saying a piece of writing can be excellent and wrong at once.
Ages 13+
Tell them the adults do not have this one. Researchers can describe the training and the architecture and still cannot reliably say why a particular model produced a particular answer. This is an open research problem rather than a gap in your preparation, and saying so buys you a great deal of credibility.
You are listening for: A student separating having built a thing from understanding it.
