Limits help, but kids need to understand what these systems are, how they work, who owns them, and what they do with their attention and their data. They will use this technology in their career, so it shouldn't be mystifying.
Most kids are having none of these conversations. In a 2026 survey of 1,204 children aged 9 to 17, 86% used AI and nearly a quarter used it every day, but more than four in ten said no parent or guardian had ever talked to them about using it safely.

Everything an AI can do, it learned from things people made. Most of those people were never asked and were never paid.

Risks and guardrails
What they know about you
You give away information about yourself in exchange for using something for free, and that information lasts far longer and goes much further than you think.

A photograph is no longer evidence that something happened. Figuring out what is real is a skill now; it's no longer about something you can see.

Online, you cannot tell who you are talking to, and increasingly you cannot tell whether it is a person at all.

Struggling doesn't mean that kids aren't learning; rather, struggle literally is them learning, and handing a task to a machine prevents them from having a learning experience.
